The Cost of Hiring an Employee in Mexico

Hiring in Mexico costs the gross salary plus a statutory employer burden set by law: IMSS social security, INFONAVIT housing, state payroll tax, paid vacation with a vacation premium, the annual aguinaldo and profit sharing where applicable. Add the market benefits the role needs to accept your offer, the recruiting cost, and the severance liability that accrues from day one. We model the exact number for your role, salary and city.

01The situation

The Budget You Approve Should Be the Budget You Pay

International finance teams rarely get Mexico wrong on salary. They get it wrong on everything that sits on top of salary, because those items are legal minimums rather than negotiated line items, and because several of them land in one month rather than twelve.

This page gives you the whole structure: what is mandatory, what is market practice, what varies by city and state, and what accrues silently until the day someone leaves.

Then you can model it yourself in our calculator, or send us the roles and receive the fully loaded monthly number per employee in USD.

Cost of hiring in Mexico in plain terms

Employer burden

Everything an employer in Mexico must pay or accrue on top of gross salary because the law requires it, rather than because the employee negotiated it.

02What we do for you

Everything That Belongs in the Budget

One accountable relationship from workforce design through ongoing delivery.

Gross salary the market will accept

Salary bands by role, seniority and city. An offer below market is not a saving, it is a vacancy.

Social security and housing

IMSS contributions and INFONAVIT housing contributions, calculated on the salary level you set.

State payroll tax

Set by the state of employment, which makes location part of the cost decision.

Statutory benefits and accruals

Paid vacation and the vacation premium, the annual aguinaldo, and profit sharing where it applies to the employing structure.

Market benefits that win candidates

Practice in competitive cities often exceeds the legal minimum. We tell you what the role actually needs rather than the cheapest lawful package.

Recruiting and severance

The one-time cost of finding the person, and the termination liability that accrues from their first day of service.

Send us the roles, the headcount or the question. A Mexico specialist comes back with the recommended model, the locations and what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

The questions buyers ask us before they commit. If yours is not here, send it and a Mexico specialist answers it directly.

Ask a Mexico Specialist
What does it cost to hire an employee in Mexico?+

Budget the gross salary plus the employer burden required by Mexican law: IMSS social security, INFONAVIT housing, state payroll tax, paid vacation with a vacation premium, the annual aguinaldo and profit sharing where applicable. The loaded percentage on top of salary depends on the salary level, the state of employment and the benefits you choose to offer. Our calculator models it for your specific role and city.

What is the difference between salary cost and total cost?+

Salary is what the employee negotiates. Total cost is what leaves your budget: salary, statutory contributions, statutory benefit accruals, the market benefits needed to win the candidate, recruiting cost, and the severance liability that accrues from the first day of service.

Do costs differ by city?+

Yes, in two ways. Salary expectations differ between Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Queretaro, Tijuana and Saltillo, and state payroll tax rates differ by state. Choosing the location well is one of the few legitimate ways to reduce cost without reducing the offer.

How much does recruiting cost on top?+

Direct hire is normally a one-time fee tied to the role and its difficulty. Staffing and EOR convert it into an ongoing per-employee cost instead. Which is cheaper depends on how long you expect to keep the role and whether you can employ locally at all.

What is the most common budgeting mistake?+

Budgeting salary and forgetting the accruals. Aguinaldo, vacation premium, profit sharing where applicable and severance exposure are real money that lands in specific months. Companies that plan them monthly are never surprised; companies that do not are surprised every December.
